On Nov. 1, 1945, John H. Johnson, founder of Johnson Publishing Company, published the first issue of Ebony magazine (a spin-off of the Negro Digest published in 1942).
According to Britannica.com, "magazines brought merit and prestige to many people of color while highlighting the great achievements of African-Americans for over 75 years."
On Nov. 1, 1951, Johnson published the first issue of Jet magazine. The weekly magazine was originally issued as a “pocket issue” to make news more accessible and convenient for its readers, “there is more news and far less time to read it,’’ said Johnson.
